Work-Trade Stewardship Residency
Kern River Permaculture is a working homestead rooted in regenerative agriculture, water-wise growing, and respectful relationship with land. We occasionally open space for long-term work-trade residents who feel genuinely called to stewardship, consistency, and trust-based responsibility rather than novelty or short-term experience. Because our systems are established and intentional, we seek individuals who value learning once, doing well, and contributing steadily over time. Helpers stay in a dedicated camping area designed to support quiet living, mutual respect, and connection with others who share a deep respect for land-based work.
A Shared Ethic of Mutual Care
This is not a retreat, not a casual volunteer experience, and not a place to “try out” homesteading. Life here follows the rhythm of daily responsibility, consistency, and care.
Frank and I hold a strong commitment to mutual aid, work-trade, and shared responsibility as a way of living simply and sustainably. We believe in taking care of one another through contribution, trust, and reciprocity rather than transactional or extractive exchange. This belief has guided much of our lives, including years spent living in intentional communities, learning how shared effort and accountability create resilience and belonging.
These values are not theoretical for us — they shape our daily choices, how work is shared, how resources are used, and how we relate to the people who pass through our lives here. Those who thrive in this environment tend to already live with a similar understanding of exchange rooted in care rather than accumulation.

Who This Is For
This work-trade is best suited for someone who:
-
Already lives with a strong connection to land, plants, and seasonal work
-
Understands that tending living systems requires showing up every day
-
Values quiet mornings, focused work, and personal accountability
-
Has prior hands-on experience with gardening, farming, permaculture, or land-based living
-
Is physically capable of consistent, outdoor work without constant direction
We work with hydroponic systems, food preservation, soil building, forest gardening, and daily maintenance tasks that cannot be skipped or postponed. Attention, follow-through, and respect for living systems are essential.
Who This Is Not For
Out of respect for our home and land, this position is not a fit for those seeking:
-
A free place to stay
-
A social or party environment
-
An unstructured or optional work arrangement
-
Constant instruction or supervision
-
A temporary pause from personal responsibility
We have learned through experience that clarity serves everyone best.
