“Welcome to Kern River Permaculture | Our Sustainable Homestead & Hydroponic Garden”

Where a Quiet Life Still Grows Wild
Where a Quiet Life Still Grows Wild

If there’s one thing homesteading has taught us, it’s that abundance doesn’t happen overnight. It shows up slowly — in the way morning light settles on the mountains, in the way a seedling stretches toward the sun, in the way an old dream deepens into a life lived with intention.

Two years ago, we began shaping this little piece of the Sequoia National Forest into a permaculture food forest. What we are growing here is more than produce. It is a place where old-world knowledge meets modern sustainability. A place where the land teaches us daily, and where we work in partnership with nature rather than trying to control it.

This new website, KernRiverPermaculture.com, is our way of opening the gate and inviting you to walk the land with us.

What You’ll Find Here

A Living, Breathing Homestead

We grow fruits, vegetables, greens, herbs, flowers, and perennial crops using permaculture principles — layered plantings, companion guilds, natural pest management, and thoughtful water stewardship. Very little here grows in rows. Instead, our food forest mimics the wild systems around us, blending beauty and function until they become one.

But our homestead is a blend of worlds. Alongside the food forest, we also grow a tremendous amount of our crops hydroponically, using indoor and outdoor systems that work year-round. Hydroponics has become one of our most important tools — allowing us to grow nutrient-dense food using a fraction of the water required for traditional in-ground gardening. In a region where every drop matters, this method has been a game-changer for sustainability.

Seasonal Harvests & Small-Batch Produce

Throughout the year, we offer limited quantities of fresh, seasonal produce and herbal goods — harvested in small batches and available only when nature allows. Everything reflects the rhythms of the land and the work of our hands.

Stories, Lessons, and Quiet Moments

You’ll find blog posts that reflect the rhythm of our days:

  • seasonal garden updates

  • harvest notes and sustainable growing practices

  • insights from both our food forest and hydroponic gardens

  • the deeper “why” behind living simply

  • the small moments that make this lifestyle meaningful

Every post is rooted in lived experience — more than 40 years of food preservation and a lifetime of homestead dreaming.

Our Mission

At its heart, this website exists to share a simple message:

A sustainable life is built one quiet choice at a time.

Each thing we grow, tend, teach, or offer is part of a larger effort to live lightly, grow abundantly, and honor the land that sustains us — whether that’s soil-grown or water-grown.

Thank You for Being Here
